Below you will find basic cultivation information for these different types. These PDF’s can be read online or easily downloaded and printed to read at your leisure. Further down the page you can find links to some interesting sites with a range of delicious mushroom based recipes.

White/Button Mushrooms

This easily cultivated mushroom is the same variety as the common white mushrooms found in the shops. A natural compost and the required covering soil are included. Following the instructions you simply grow your own mushrooms and pick them fresh whenever you need them.

Brown/Chestnut Mushrooms

The brown variety of the common white mushroom. Often called Chestnut Mushrooms these grow on the same natural compost but have a slightly stronger flavour. With their interesting appearance they are a nice mushroom to grow at home and bring something different to your table.

Anis or Horse Mushroom

The culture of these mushrooms goes exactly as for the white and brown mushrooms. This is a fleshy mushroom with a slight taste of aniseed.

Oyster Mushroom

This variety grows on straw and needs plenty of light so it is recommended that it is cultivated by a window. This interesting mushroom is easy to cultivate and has a wonderful shape. The oyster mushroom is versatile and can be used in lots of different cooking styles and recipes.

Yellow Oyster Mushroom

This is the yellow variety of the Oyster Mushroom and grows in identical conditions; on straw and with plenty of light. It has a similar taste and is as equally versatile as the normal Oyster Mushroom.

Stropharia

This is a sturdy white fleshed mushroom and is not as well known as some of the other varieties. It contains lots of vitamins and can have a positive effect on some problems of the nervous and digestive systems.

Shii-Take

This variety grows on wood and in this case on specially selected sawdust. Thanks to its herby flavour it is particularly suited to eastern cooking such as stir-frys. The shiitake can also be dried and stored after cultivation. Another variety which likes lots of light so a window is recommended for cultivation.
